The major question most people will have when they get into university or college, what job is right for me? I had the very same question going into, and midway through the first year. As I had a reasonable ability with computers I thought the logical pick was to go into computer science. Making and repairing computers is one thing, programming them is quite another. I lasted a whole two and a half months inside the course before I needed to switch programs otherwise I would have had a GPAa lot less than my blood alcohol content. I had an approximate idea about what I wanted to do for a career after university, but I had a better idea on what I didn’t want to do. I was lucky to be living in residence where there were plenty of resources to my disposal. On top of that there were lots of of students under-going the same thing I was and have made challenging choices before. I talked to my Resident Advisor about the difficulty I was having and she recommended that I take a career workshop.

A career workshop is a course in which you discover what job field is best for you. They ask you lots of questions based upon personality, your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your likes and dislikes. At the end they tally up your scores and it places you into distinct categories that gives you a improved picture of what to do in your future. When I took it I scored 92% in the entrepreneur category. The course instructors even had a page full of example employment opportunities in each particular field, and after looking at the entrepreneur category I realized I liked all of those job possibilities. Thus as soon as I pointed out that entrepreneurship or business was suitable for me, only two faculties stood out so I shifted into a business degree and I couldn’t be happier.

With out the workshop I wouldn’t have been able to realize which path was right for me, at least it would have taken me a lot longer. It made me see my abilities and failings and it taught me to be discover what I was fascinated in. I always had an idea what it was, but I never could put any words to it. After looking online there doesn’t appear to be any good courses that provided me with results as good as the ones I received from the in person course. At colleges, the course is usually free (paid for by your student union) so I recommend everybody to take it if they are confused about their future. If it isn’t free it isn’t a lot of cash either, and the 2 hours there will save you time and money.

Finding out about this career workshop was the best thing that happened because I was able to find out what job is right for me.
